About Deb LaFogg-Docherty
PSA, AFC, MC
I grew up on a small farm in Connecticut. Being an only child allowed me many hours to paint and explore the woods and swamps around our house. I received no formal training till I attended Art College, where I majored in advertising and illustration. In my second year there one of my paintings entitled Toy in the Attic made it into an art exhibit at the Yale University Art Gallery show. Shortly after I graduated with honors. From there, I traveled to sunny South Florida.
My past endeavors have included being a freelance rock photographer, taking pictures of Styx, Robert Plant, Steve Marriott of Humble Pie and many more. I currently work for a newspaper as a special sections designer and still manage to paint every day.
The most exciting part of preparing to do a painting going out into the field to gather the reference for my paintings. That means coming face to face with some of natures most prized possessions; its wild creatures. The most challenging part of what I do is translating the experience onto paper. I enjoy working in oils, acrylics and pastels.
I have studied with world renowned artists; Hall of Fame/Master Pastelist Doug Dawson and the late Maggie Price Master Circle winner and past President of the International Association of Pastel Societies.
June 2011 I received the Masters Circle Award from the International Association of Pastel Societies, October 2011 one of my paintings received second place in drawing in a National Wildlife Art competition and just received word three of my works have won the honor to be part of the Paint the Parks and Paint America Competitions.
I am currently a signature member of the Pastel Society of America, Artist for Conservation, a member of excellence with the Southeastern Pastel Society, The Pastel Society of North Florida, the International Guild of Realism, associate member of the Society of Animal Artists, associate member of Audubon Artists and an associate member of the Oil Painters of America.
My paintings have been in various shows around the country and in galleries and several museums shows. I was the corner stone artist for the "Cat's Meow Show, from mild to wild" at the Cornell Museum in Delray Beach, FL. Most recently my painting Under Moms Watchful Eye was selected to be the poster for the Sarasota Wildlife Art Festival 2013.
I've been published in many newspapers and several magazines including Wildlife Art Magazine, Wildscape Magazine located in the UK and Southwest and Wildlife art magazine online.
I have also illustrated a childrens book called "Woodrat Jill" with part of the proceeds going to preserve habitat for the endangered Key Largo Woodrat and is available on Amazon.com. Its a story about an Key Largo Woodrat named Jill who bred in captivity and is set free to make a life on her own. A new book is on it's way!
